It is partly because I graduated from the Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, as well as being an educator (Brown University, 1970-75) and observed the liberal arts programs from a first-hand perspective (Brown University) In my opinion, it is important to integrate education and the study of art with different subjects. There is no reason to be surprised that an ethnomusicologist with a PhD and MA from UCLA is interested in the arts. It is not surprising that the department of ethnomusicology located at UC Berkeley, where I was a professor from 1975-1976 is housed in the college of letters and Science's Department of Music. It's great to be involved in multiple areas of interest. It is also fun to see the larger overall picture. I really enjoy teaching both undergraduates (majors and non-majors), which is why I've written three books - Music in India Music in India: Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically and Music in Japan: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture) as well as graduate students. In addition, I have a variety of periods where I pursue primarily professorial activities with periods when I add administrative duties to my schedule (Chair of the Department of Music 1983-88, Dean of Undergraduate Advising 1992-98; Chair of The Deans of the College of Letters and Science 1994-98, Chair of the Group on Asian Studies from 1999, and is now the Chair of the Department of Music again).
